Starting School in Reception year

All children are entitled to start Reception year in school (YR) in the September after their fourth birthday.  By law, children have to be receiving full-time education by the start of the term following their fifth birthday.

The vast majority of children follow this pattern of entry into their Reception year in school. There are now a number of options available for your child's entry to school if your child is a Summer born child i.e. has their birthday between 1st April – 31st August. These options are detailed in the document below. (Hard copies are available from Reception).

Please note that if you decide that deferment (delaying your child's entry until later on in the school year) or deceleration (delaying your child's entry for an entire school year): both of which are available for summer born children only, is an option you would like to consider you must discuss this with Hampshire Admissions team on 01962 847485 / 846660. Once you have discussed your options with the admissions team please also inform us at Lanterns as soon as possible. This will enable us to possibly allocate a continued place for your child.

If you would like to discuss your child's entry to school please speak to your class teacher or keyperson. For general school admission queries please contact Hampshire County Council using the contact details at the end of the attached document.
